Fenging, located in the Hebei province, has been producing unique and skilled paper cuttings since the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912). The paper cuttings are admired for their originality and traditionally local designs.
Fenging paper cutting combines the skills and techniques from the ethnic folk arts of the Han and Manchu nationalities. The paper cuttings are closely connected to local customs and traditions and are often included as decorations for many festivals and celebrations.
There are two famous festivals where paper cuttings are prominently featured. The Spring Festival, which celebrates the lunar Chinese New Year, features paper cutting designs associated with flowers, auspicious animals and the Chinese zodiac symbols. The Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month and includes many paper cuttings of the fruit, gourds. The gourd is believed to ward off evil spirits. The main subject used for Fengning paper cuttings are flowers, birds, landscapes, scenery and people.
Fengning Paper cut art has been recognized at home and internationally as an ingenious and talented folk craft. In 1984, two paper cut artists from Fengning were invited to be a part of an exhibition in Disney Land in America. After this, the popularity of Fengning paper cuttings soared and many were exported to various other countries.
Fengning continues to produce skillful and imaginative paper cuttings. The patience and precision of Fengning paper cut artists have led to beautiful and creative designs which have gained the respect of the global art community. This traditional folk art is a valuable part of China’s heritage that has developed into its own style over many centuries.
