Daming Straw Weaving

Daming County in the Hebei Province is referred to as the birthplace of current straw weaving crafts. It has a long traditional history of producing many ornaments and collectable art pieces made from weaved straw. Xifuji town, which is twenty kilometres east of Daming County, is especially known for its creative weaved straw crafts.

With a history of over 1500 years, Daming County has become famous within China as one of the main production areas for straw weaving. Straw weaving was introduced to the region from Yexian of the Shandong Province during the Yongzheng period (1723-1736) of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912). It first originated in Xifuji town and the skills were gradually taught to villagers in the eastern region of Weihe in the Daming County. Most households within these villages are skilled at straw weaving. By the 1980’s, many handmade straw ornaments were transported to other provinces in China and exported to other Asian and European countries.

Practical straw ornaments such as straw hats, suits, cloaks and skirts are all produced by craftsmen in the Daming County. This weaving art has gradually been awarded the title of a traditional Chinese folk art cherished for its skills and weaving designs.
