Yulin Paper Cuttings

Yulin is situated in the far north of the Shaanxi province and is famous for its local traditional paper cuttings. It is an important folk custom which helps identify the important folk lore and traditions which are part of the town’s fascinating culture.

The world renowned famous paper cut artist, Guo Peizhen, was born in Yulin and creates many paper cuttings which represent local traditional tales and images relating to Yulin customs. She is known worldwide as the “Picasso of loess landform”. Her designs are featured in many exhibitions and displayed in various museums throughout the world.

Another famous paper cut artist to come from Yulin is Cao Hongxia. Her art works have been sold in many overseas countries including Canada, United States, Britain, Italy and Japan. She is currently applying for the record of the world's largest paper cutting in the Guinness World Record with a length of 12.1 metres and a width of 1.2 metres.

Yulin features some of the most prominent paper cuttings which are known for their exquisite detail and festive charm. During festivals and celebrations, paper cuttings can be found on all village doors, windows and halls in the town. Paper cuttings are affectionately known as “window flowers” in Yulin as they can be seen in most windows through the town.

Home to some of the most famous paper cut artists, Yulin is a culturally rich town featuring an abundance of talented artists and craftsmen. Yulin paper cuttings are known for their exaggerated and abstract designs which seem to rise from the paper. Initiatives to encourage  more artists to adopt this ancient folk art are needed to stop Yulin paper cuttings from facing extinction. Hopefully, more support will revive the treasured art form and allow the younger generation to become involved in creating these cherised works of art.
