Jianping Paper Cuttings

Jianping paper cut art is the name given to the style of paper cutting that is dominant in the three northeast provinces of China. It is unique from all other styles as incense is used to create a smoky glaze over the character’s or animal’s eyes in the paper cutting. The eyes become realistic and seem as if they are staring at the viewer.

Reaching its peak in the 1980’s, Jianping paper cuttings have been shown in many exhibitions in China and globally. Unfortunately, skilled craftsmen such as the famous Zhao Xiulian, are becoming rare and this has led to a decline in the quantity and quality of paper art in the region.

This folk art is in need of preservation and cannot be neglected. It is essential that the older craftsmen are given the opportunity to pass their talented skills on to younger apprentices so Jianping paper cut art can be enjoyed and further developed by future generations.
