China Crafts

Porcelain · silk · lacquer · jade

Clay, thread, lacquer and stone — crafts that still have workshops.

China Crafts

China holds more elements on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage lists than any other country — forty-five at last public count — from sericulture and silk to paper-cutting and traditional architecture. This site is a short map of the crafts a reader meets first: Jingdezhen porcelain, the Four Embroideries, carved lacquer, jade, cloisonné (Jingtailan), and scissors on red paper. It is a primer. It does not sell antiques and it is not a UK tableware catalogue.

Porcelain

Jingdezhen, blue-and-white, Song restraint.

Silk

Mulberry, reel, loom. UNESCO 2009.

Embroidery

Su, Xiang, Yue, Shu — four schools.

Paper-cutting

Scissors, red paper, a window.
